FAQ: AirTag Edition - elago

FAQ: AirTag Edition

By elago blog on May 28, 2024

What exactly is an Apple AirTag? Apple AirTags are small puck-shaped tracking devices (1.26 inches in diameter) designed to help you locate lost items. Utilizing Apple's extensive Find My network, these devices can be attached to keys, bags, wallets, or other personal belongings. When an item goes missing, you can use the Find My app on your iPhone to track it down. AirTags leverage Bluetooth and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology to provide precise location data, making it easier to find your items through visual, audible, and haptic feedback.

How Far Away Will AirTags Work?

AirTags use Bluetooth to communicate directly with your iPhone for short distances, up to about 33 feet (10 meters). However for long distance, there really is no limit and AirTags rely on the Find My network, which uses nearly a billion Apple devices worldwide to relay the location of your AirTag back to you anonymously through iCloud. This system works remarkably well in urban areas with high concentrations of Apple devices.

AirTags do not work on a subscription basis! The initial cost of the device is the only expense, with individual AirTags priced at around $29 and a four-pack available for approximately $99.

How to Tell if an AirTag Is Tracking You?

If an AirTag that isn’t registered to your Apple ID is moving with you, your iPhone will alert you. Thus, if someone has maliciously placed an AirTag on you or your vehicle, you will know. Stay safe!

Are AirTags GPS Devices?

No, AirTags are not GPS devices. They use Bluetooth and UWB for short-range tracking and rely on the Find My network for broader location tracking through nearby Apple devices. This makes them less precise than GPS trackers, but they also do not require a subscription or regular recharging . In fact, the AirTag is battery operated and is not chargeable so the batteries need to be replaced. To find out how to replace an AirTag battery, read our article here.
